Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a structured, evidence-based form of therapy that is a powerful tool for people with many mental health conditions who feel negative emotions more quickly, frequently, and intensely. It’s designed to help people who struggle with intense emotions, relationship challenges, or impulsive behaviors build healthier coping and conflict resolution strategies as well as emotional stability. Many people who practice DBT consistently say it’s been the most impactful tool for easing emotional pain and building stronger emotional regulation, leading to greater emotional balance and more positive day-to-day experiences.
DBT combines mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness to help individuals reduce reactivity, strengthen communication, and increase self-awareness over time. With consistent practice, DBT helps foster greater balance and resilience—so you can respond to life’s challenges with more clarity, control, and confidence.

At Grouport, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is used to support a wide range of mental health conditions. Here’s how DBT helps with some of the most common concerns:
Originally developed for BPD, DBT is considered the most effective treatment for it. DBT addresses the emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, relationship conflict, and fear of abandonment often associated with BPD. Core DBT skills teach clients how to manage emotional intensity, communicate needs effectively, and navigate relationships with more stability.
DBT equips individuals with mindfulness techniques and distress tolerance skills that reduce overthinking, rumination, and physical symptoms of anxiety. By increasing emotional regulation and present-moment awareness, clients learn how to pause before reacting and challenge anxious thoughts more effectively.
DBT helps those with depression develop skills to manage intense emotional lows, increase motivation through behavioral activation, and strengthen interpersonal connections. It also targets hopelessness by fostering daily structure, emotional balance, and self-validation.
DBT helps trauma survivors manage overwhelming emotional responses without resorting to avoidance or self-destructive behaviors. It provides practical tools for emotion regulation and grounding, and prepares individuals for additional trauma work (like prolonged exposure or EMDR) if needed.
For those with bipolar disorder, DBT supports emotion regulation and helps manage impulsivity during manic or hypomanic episodes. Skills like mindfulness and distress tolerance can ease transitions between mood states and improve coping during depressive cycles.
DBT helps with emotional impulsivity, poor frustration tolerance, and difficulty managing time or tasks—challenges commonly experienced by those with ADHD. Clients build self-awareness, emotional regulation, and more adaptive ways to respond to distractions or overwhelm.
DBT is widely used to reduce self-harming behaviors and thoughts of suicide by teaching safer coping alternatives, improving emotional stability, and building a sense of meaning and purpose. It provides clients with tools to ride out emotional waves without turning to self-destructive responses.
DBT helps individuals with eating disorders manage urges, regulate emotions tied to food, and reduce harmful coping mechanisms like restriction, bingeing, or purging. By increasing distress tolerance and self-acceptance, DBT provides tools to interrupt disordered behaviors, improve body awareness, and build a more compassionate relationship with food and self.
For those struggling with substance use, DBT offers strategies to tolerate distress without turning to substances, regulate emotions that trigger cravings, and improve impulse control. It also supports long-term recovery by helping clients identify triggers, strengthen values-based decision-making, and repair relationships impacted by substance use.
DBT is helpful for many other mental health conditions and life challenges as well. Its skills-based structure makes it a valuable tool for anyone looking to build emotional resilience, strengthen relationships, or enhance overall mindfulness and self-awareness.

DBT therapy groups contain a maximum of 12 members, but typically operate with 6-8 members at any given time. Each group is led by a licensed therapist who specializes in the group’s focus.
If you’re not prompted to create a member portal account when signing up, your sessions will take place via weekly video links sent by email. You’ll receive a confirmation email with details about your therapy match, and then a reminder email 24 hours before each session containing that week’s unique link. (Note: the link changes each week.)
If you do create a member portal account during signup, your sessions will take place within the portal, except for your initial consultation. You’ll receive a confirmation email with a unique link for that first consultation. After that, you’ll be able to log into the portal and join your weekly sessions directly from the homepage.
You do not need to talk during the group if you do not feel comfortable. We understand that speaking up with mental health challenges — even with structured support — can be hard, and if you prefer to just listen and observe, there is definitely benefit in doing so.
In fact, you could remain anonymous by adopting a nickname. Most members are surprised by how quickly they feel comfortable in the group setting, and report that sharing and being vulnerable with others is precisely the leading element to their recovery process.
Grouport’s online DBT therapy groups follow a structured, module-driven program designed to help you build and reinforce lifelong DBT skills — all in a supportive, therapist-led environment. Groups meet weekly via video chat with the same therapist and members to create consistency, connection, and accountability.
The group kicks off with a 12-week introductory phase, where you’ll be introduced to the foundations of DBT. During this phase, you'll begin developing core skills in emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness — supported by weekly handouts and worksheets aligned with each session.
After the first 12 sessions, the group transitions into monthly advanced DBT modules that deepen those same core skills. Here’s a preview of what you’ll cover:
The full program includes a year’s worth of structured DBT content, gradually progressing from foundational learning to advanced skill integration. In the final phase (after one year), the group evolves into a support-style format focused on applying and maintaining the skills you've developed over time.
The group is ongoing, and you're welcome to continue for as long as it's helpful. There's a 12-session minimum commitment from the time you join. You can cancel anytime and simply finish out whichever billing period you're on.
You can also switch groups at any time and for any reason — we’re here to help ensure you’re happy with your group experience.
Whether you're new to DBT or looking to deepen your practice, this group offers a flexible and supportive long-term path to personal growth.

💡 Even More Savings:
Pay quarterly (save 10%) or biannually (save 20%) for even lower rates
We currently do not accept insurance — and we understand that’s an important factor when choosing DBT group therapy. Grouport was built to provide high-quality, structured mental health support that’s affordable, flexible, and accessible — even without insurance.
💡 Here’s why thousands choose Grouport:
✅ Flat monthly pricing — no surprise bills, claims, or deductibles
✅ FSA/HSA eligible — use your HSA or FSA card at checkout
✅ Sessions average over time as low as $23–$32 for group therapy and $103 for individual therapy
✅ 4–5 sessions per month at the same flat monthly rate — no surprise extra charge in 5-week months. Many other services cap sessions at 4 per month or charge extra for a 5th session.
✅ Individual sessions are 45 minutes (longer than the 30-minute average on many platforms)
✅ Group sessions are a full 60 minutes, led by licensed therapists
→ Grouport offers structured, therapist-led group sessions that deliver real skills and connection — often at a cost lower than the average insurance co-pay or coinsurance.
✅ Add more, save more – Each additional group session is ~30% off, and discounts also apply when adding extra individual, couples, or family therapy sessions per week
✅ Save even more — get 10% off when paying quarterly or 20% off when paying biannually
While many people assume therapy is fully covered by insurance, the reality is that coverage is often limited or partial, and depends heavily on your specific plan. Some plans only reimburse therapy after you’ve met a high deductible, or may restrict the number or duration of sessions covered.
We can however provide you with detailed invoices that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential out-of-network reimbursement. The reimbursement amount will vary based on your plan, so we recommend checking with your insurance provider to understand your eligibility.
Unlike insurance-based therapy, Grouport doesn’t require a diagnosis, medical records, or clinical justifications to access care. Many insurance plans only cover therapy if there’s a diagnosed mental health disorder — and may require your therapist to submit treatment plans or progress notes. At Grouport, your care stays between you and your therapist — giving you more privacy, more control, and faster access to support.
What makes Grouport different? It starts with how we deliver care.
We provide more care, more time, and more flexibility — all at a price that’s clear, consistent, and affordable.
Unlike most platforms that focus solely on individual therapy or asynchronous text messaging, Grouport’s core strength is structured, therapist-led group therapy — a rare and powerful format designed to help members build skills, find connection, and make real progress. It’s especially effective for those navigating complex or persistent mental health challenges.
Few platforms offer online group therapy. Fewer do it well — and at a price this accessible.
And while group therapy is our specialty, we also offer individual, couples, family, teen therapy, and IOP — all designed to work together or on their own, depending on your goals. Whether you're looking for focused support or a more comprehensive care plan, we’ll help you find the right fit.
Our group plans are often more affordable than the average monthly cost of major therapy platforms — even with insurance.
Additional benefits include:
✔️ Start care within hours to days — not weeks or months
✔️ Therapist and group matching based on your preferences
✔️ Evidence-based care for anxiety, depression, trauma, BPD, Bipolar, OCD, and more
✔️ Specialized support for high-acuity and treatment-resistant conditions
✔️ The ability to switch groups or therapists anytime
Whether you’re looking for your first therapy experience, standalone support, or want to combine group therapy with individual care, Grouport offers better access, greater value, and a care experience built around real, measurable progress.
