Online Group Therapy for Belize, Without the 20-Week Queue.

Grouport connects Belizeans with licensed therapists in small, 6-to-12-person online groups for $32 a session. With only 0.28 mental health workers per 100,000 people across the country, local wait times can stretch past 20 weeks. Sessions run in English over HIPAA-compliant video, and matching happens right away of sign-up.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Understanding the landscape of mental health care access and the challenges
residents face across the state.

Mental Illness Prevalence

17.2% of Belizean adults live with a mental health condition each year, reflecting the ongoing need for accessible therapy options.

Wait Time

20 weeks the average wait to secure a first mental health appointment in Belize's public system, an interval during which symptoms often deepen.

Median Household Income

$13,633 median household income in Belize, shaping what households can allocate to private mental health care.

Percentage Who Need Therapy

85.0% of Belizean adults with a mental health condition do not receive formal specialist treatment.

Provider Shortage

99% of Belize's mental health workforce falls short of what is needed to fully meet population demand for specialist care.

Mental Health Providers per 100k Residents

0.28 per 100,000 mental health workers in Belize, a density that shapes availability, wait times, and access across the country.

Belize is a country of roughly 417,000 people served by a mental health workforce that WHO records at 0.28 per 100,000, the equivalent of only a handful of practicing specialists nationwide. That thin coverage sits against a regional treatment gap estimated by PAHO at close to 70%, meaning the majority of Belizeans who could benefit from care never reach a provider. UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE

Understanding Mental Health Access in Belize.

The Problem

Belize's mental health system is centralized around a small number of public facilities, chiefly in Belize City and Belmopan, supported by community mental health nurses covering entire districts. With WHO recording 0.28 specialists per 100,000 residents, a single practitioner can be the only trained option across an entire rural constituency. Private psychology practices exist but cluster in the Belize District, and out-of-pocket fees quickly rise above what a household earning near the country's $13,780 PPP average can absorb week after week.

The Impact

The practical effect is triage by geography. A resident of Punta Gorda or San Ignacio who calls the national referral line in Belize City may be told the next available intake is roughly five months out, the 20-week figure we cite is the working assumption clinicians use when routing non-urgent cases. During that gap people rely on primary-care GPs, faith communities, or nothing at all. For anyone actively trying to change how they feel week to week, a five-month lag effectively means no care.

The Solution

Online group therapy compresses the two hardest parts of that timeline: the wait and the trip. Grouport places new members into an existing small group inside immediate, and every session runs from a phone or laptop over encrypted video. Because the format is group-based, one licensed therapist can serve six to twelve people at once, which is why the price lands at $32 per session, a fraction of what a private hourly session in Belize City typically costs.

99% of Belize's mental health workforce falls short of what is needed to fully meet population demand for specialist care.

Grouport removes the three barriers that shape care in Belize: the distance from Toledo or Corozal to a specialist, the multi-month queue for a public intake, and the per-session cost of private practice. Sessions are in English, which aligns with Belize's official language and avoids the translation gaps that Spanish-speaking regional platforms sometimes create. All that's needed is a stable data connection, coverage that Digi and Smart now extend across most towns and villages.

Access and Availability Across Belize.

Availability in Belize is less a question of whether services exist and more a question of how far you have to travel and how long you can wait once you get there. The country's six districts share a mental health workforce that WHO measures at 0.28 per 100,000, and the bulk of that workforce is concentrated in and around Belize City.

Geographic Barriers

Belize covers about 22,970 square kilometers, and its road network, the Philip Goldson, George Price, Hummingbird, and Southern Highways, funnels most inter-district travel through a handful of arteries. For someone in Independence or Dangriga, reaching a psychologist in Belize City can mean a four-to-six-hour bus day. Communities in Toledo District, including Mayan villages inland from Punta Gorda, sit farther still from any specialist. Online sessions collapse that geography into whatever room the member is already sitting in.

Extended Wait Times

A 20-week wait is not an abstraction. It's the difference between reaching out in July and being seen in November. For a Belizean navigating grief, workplace burnout, or a rocky relationship, that window is when patterns harden. Grouport's immediate group start window is designed for exactly that gap: someone can decide on a Monday and be sitting in their first group meeting by the weekend, with a therapist who has already reviewed their intake.

Systemic Challenges

Belize's Ministry of Health and Wellness runs the public mental health program largely out of the Cleopatra White Polyclinic and community nurse network, with limited coverage under private insurance schemes for outpatient psychotherapy. Employers offering group medical plans through insurers like Atlantic or RF&G rarely include robust mental health benefits, so most talk therapy is paid out of pocket. That reality is why Grouport's $32 session price and $140 monthly cap were designed to be predictable rather than tied to any local reimbursement code.

Urban-Rural Divide

With Belize's urbanization rate at 55%, nearly half the country lives outside towns, in Toledo villages, Cayo farming settlements, coastal communities on Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, and along the Northern and Southern Highways. Almost every trained mental health worker practices in the urban 55%, which leaves the rural half of the population reliant on community nurses, primary-care GPs, or long-distance bus travel. A video-based group flips that map: the same licensed clinician is equally reachable from Corozal Town, Placencia, or a bush camp with a hotspot.

It's built to fill the specific gap between the moment someone decides they want support and the moment a local specialist could actually see them.

Affordable Group Therapy Costs for Belize Residents.

Affordability and Income

Set against Belize's $13,780 GNI per capita (PPP, World Bank 2024), a $140 monthly Grouport membership works out to roughly 1.2% of average annual income spent on weekly professional support. For a household paid closer to the $7,150 Atlas figure, the ratio is higher, but still meaningfully below the cost of two private hourly sessions per month at Belize City rates. The pricing was chosen so that consistency, not affordability, is the deciding factor for whether someone stays in care.

Hidden Cost and Barriers

The sticker price of a Belize City private session usually understates what the appointment actually costs. Add a bus fare from Orange Walk or Dangriga, a lost half-day of wages, sometimes an overnight stay if the last northbound bus leaves before the session ends, and the true weekly commitment climbs quickly. Grouport removes all of it: no travel, no time off beyond the 60-minute session itself, and no incidental costs that turn a $150 appointment into a $250 day.

Immediate Availability

Getting into a Grouport group takes immediate from intake. Compared with the roughly 20-week queue Belizeans face for public sector therapy, that is the single biggest difference the format offers, care starts the same week the decision is made.

Private psychotherapy in Belize typically runs between BZ$150 and BZ$300 per hour in Belize City and San Pedro, and often more for expatriate-oriented practices. Grouport's flat $32 per session (US) sits well below the low end of that range, and the $140 monthly membership caps what a family needs to budget for weekly care.

Mental Health Conditions We Treat in Belize.

Grouport runs dedicated groups for anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship challenges, trauma and PTSD, obsessive-compulsive patterns, and DBT skills for emotional regulation. Members from Belize join groups alongside participants from across the US and the Caribbean, which means someone in Belmopan sits with peers navigating similar patterns rather than in a group defined by geography. The framing across every group is skills-oriented, what to try this week, rather than diagnostic labeling.

Meet Our Therapists

Our therapists represent a wide range of clinical specialties & diverse backgrounds. They all undergo the most stringent credentialing process. Grouport therapists are caring, expert mental health professionals with years of experience helping people get the tools they need to see long-lasting change.

Every Grouport group is led by a licensed clinician, LCSW, LMFT, LPC, or PhD-level psychologist, trained in the group modality they facilitate. For Belizean clients, the practical relevance is that English is the working language of every session, which aligns with Belize's official language and removes the translation friction that Spanish-first regional platforms can introduce. Therapists are matched to a member's stated goals during intake rather than by state or country, so cultural fit is handled through the matching process rather than assumed by geography.

Common Questions About Group Therapy in Belize.

Is Grouport a good fit for university students and young adults in Belize City or the Cayo District?

Yes. Young Belizeans juggling studies at the University of Belize, early careers, or life on Ambergris Caye often find local counsellors clustered far away and priced in cash BZD. Grouport runs weekly video groups of 6-12 peers guided by a licensed therapist, in English, for $32 per session. Evening groups on US Central and Eastern schedules land at natural after-work hours on Belize's UTC-6 clock, so students can join right away from a dorm in Belmopan, a shared flat in Belize City, or a laptop in San Ignacio over HIPAA-secure video.

How long would I wait for public mental health care in Belize compared to joining a Grouport group?

Public referrals through the Ministry of Health and Wellness, funnelled to the psychiatric unit at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City or a regional psychiatric nurse practitioner, commonly stretch to around 20 weeks, and a private psychologist in Belmopan can still require a long bus ride or a water-taxi from Ambergris Caye. Grouport skips that entirely. You choose a weekly video group of 6-12 members led by a licensed therapist, join right away from anywhere in Belize, and pay $32 per session on a HIPAA-secure platform.

What if I'm on Medicaid—can I use Grouport?
Grouport doesn't directly accept Medicaid, but you can self-pay. Our Online Group Therapy options are typically the most affordable and only cost $25/session - $35/session depending on which group you sign up for.
What if I'm in a country where therapy is culturally unfamiliar?
Some cultures don't have a concept of therapy or view it very differently than Western psychology does. If you're from a culture where you wouldn't normally do therapy, it can feel strange or uncomfortable initially. Your therapist can explain how it works and adapt their approach to fit your cultural background.
Can therapy help with language barriers affecting my life?
If you're living somewhere and the dominant language isn't your first language, that's mentally exhausting. Constant translation. Missing nuances. Feeling like you can't express yourself fully. This affects mental health. Therapy in a language you're comfortable with provides relief.
Will I have to share my story in front of strangers?
You're never forced to share anything in online group therapy. Groups work at your own pace, and many people observe for several sessions before actively participating, and that's completely acceptable. Good group therapists create safety where participation feels natural overtime. You might start by simply introducing yourself, then gradually share more as comfort builds. Many people worry about this initially but find that sharing with others who genuinely understand because they struggle in a similar way is less scary and more relieving than expected and it's precisely this vulnerability that leads to tremendous progress. Group members typically respond with empathy and support and not judgment. The therapeutic power comes partly from being witnessed and accepted by others. Most people find that they are naturally willing to open up over time and share more, as it's precisely this vulnerability and being open with others that leads to the bulk of therapeutic progress.
How is online group therapy different from online individual therapy?
Online Group therapy differs from individual therapy in several ways in that you share therapist attention with other members versus exclusive focus on you, you receive feedback from multiple perspectives not just the therapist, you learn by observing others' experiences and progress, and you practice interpersonal skills in real-time with peers. Groups create this whole other dimension as you get multiple perspectives and see how others handle similar problems which helps you feel less alone. Cost per session is typically lower than individual therapy, as groups cost about $25 - $35 per group session. Group provides community and reduces isolation in ways individual therapy cannot. However, individual therapy offers personalized attention, and exploration of issues you might not share in groups. Many people benefit from both simultaneously, group for skill-building and support and individual therapy for deeper personal work. Neither is better, they serve different functional needs but have complementary purposes. Many people find group therapy to be more powerful than individual therapy because of the connection factor.
What is online group therapy?
Online Group therapy is mental health treatment where 6-12 people with similar concerns meet regularly with a licensed therapist over video chat. Unlike individual therapy's one-on-one format, online group therapy leverages peer support and shared experiences for healing. Members share challenges, give and receive feedback, practice new skills together, and learn from others' perspectives and progress. Groups may focus on specific issues like anxiety, depression, grief, DBT skills, CBT, OCD, trauma & PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar, anger management and more. Groups can also be general process groups addressing various concerns. The therapist facilitates group dynamics, teaches skills, and guides productive interactions. Research shows group therapy is as effective as individual therapy for many issues and provides unique benefits individual therapy cannot address. Because of this, Online Group Therapy has complimentary benefits, and is often a major driver of improved therapeutic outcomes for people who feel stuck as learning through others' experiences gives the accountability and adherence needed to stick with treatment and keeps you on track with what successful treatment looks like.
How do I know if I'm ready to leave the group?
Many times people look at group as part of their wellness routine and as an ongoing part of ensuring their continued wellbeing. So, it can be like something you consistently do on a weekly basis for your continued wellbeing. That said, if you feel like you've met your goals, feel equipped to handle your mental health independently, and the group stops feeling like active growth then it's possible that it might be the right time to graduate from the group and that’s a positive sign of progress. Your therapist can help you assess readiness and help you explore if it's beneficial to stick with the group for ongoing care maintenance or if you’d be better off leaving the group. It’s always up to you if you wish to stick with the group, switch to another type of group, or stop.
Is there a long-term commitment required for therapy?
No, Grouport operates on a month-to-month basis with no long-term commitments required for our therapy plans. You can cancel at anytime and you’d just finish out whichever month you’re on. This flexibility allows you to attend therapy for as long as it's helpful. Many clients continue for several months or years as they work through their goals, while others use Grouport for shorter-term support. The choice is entirely yours, and you're never obligated to continue beyond your current billing period.
Can I change my session times?
Yes, if you need to change your recurring group therapy session time you can absolutely switch groups to one that works better for your schedule. Groups work on a set schedule so we don’t reschedule group sessions but if you can’t make a particular group session we can always add in a credit as long as it's within reason. If you need to reschedule an individual, couples, or a family therapy session, you can coordinate with your therapist and our care team to find a new time for that week - just provide advance notice. ✅ Occasional reschedules are fine, but we recommend keeping changes to a minimum for consistency. ✅ Need to change your recurring weekly time? Our team will help you adjust to a new time that fits your schedule.
Can I attend online therapy sessions via phone if needed?
Yes\! You can attend over video chat on any smartphone. While we recommend video on a computer or laptop for the best therapeutic experience, you can attend sessions by any smartphone as well. Additionally, you can also attend sessions by audio only if needed, though we recommend to join by video for the best experience.
