Online Group Therapy for Cambodia, Without the 9-Week Wait.

Across Cambodia's 25 provinces, licensed mental health professionals remain scarce and largely concentrated in Phnom Penh. Grouport connects Cambodian residents to English-speaking licensed therapists through weekly video groups of 6 to 12 people, at $32 per session with a match right away instead of the typical nine-week local wait.

The State of Mental Health in Cambodia.

Understanding the landscape of mental health care access and the challenges
residents face across the state.

Mental Illness Prevalence

10.6% of Cambodian adults live with a mental health condition each year, reflecting the ongoing need for accessible therapy options.

Wait Time

26 weeks the average wait to secure a first mental health appointment in Cambodia's public system, an interval during which symptoms often deepen.

Median Household Income

$5,600 median household income in Cambodia, shaping what households can allocate to private mental health care.

Percentage Who Need Therapy

89.0% of Cambodian adults with a mental health condition do not receive formal specialist treatment.

Provider Shortage

80% of Cambodia's mental health workforce falls short of what is needed to fully meet population demand for specialist care.

Mental Health Providers per 100k Residents

10.1 per 100,000 mental health workers in Cambodia, a density that shapes availability, wait times, and access across the country.

These figures draw on the WHO Global Health Observatory workforce dataset (2019 reporting) and World Bank national accounts (2024). Cambodia's post-conflict history, combined with a young population and rapid urban migration to Phnom Penh, has produced a demand for mental health support that outpaces what the current specialist workforce can absorb. The country has invested in community-level mental health integration through public health centers, but formal psychotherapy remains uncommon outside major cities.

UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE

Understanding Mental Health Access in Cambodia.

The Problem

Cambodia's specialist mental health workforce numbers roughly 10.08 professionals for every 100,000. In practical terms, that means a nation of 17.6 million people is served by a few hundred psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses combined, most of whom practice in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap. Rural provinces such as Mondulkiri, Ratanakiri, and Preah Vihear frequently have no resident psychiatrist at all, leaving primary care nurses and NGO-run outreach programs to fill the gap.

The Impact

The consequence for a Cambodian resident seeking talk therapy is a nine-week average wait for a first appointment at public facilities, and often longer for follow-up sessions. For someone managing anxiety while working in Phnom Penh's garment or tourism sectors, or a university student in Battambang navigating burnout, that waiting period can stretch through an entire academic term or a full seasonal work cycle. Private counseling exists but concentrates in the capital and is priced beyond reach for most households earning near the $5,600 GNI PPP national average.

The Solution

Online group therapy shifts the equation. Rather than depending on how many licensed clinicians happen to live within driving distance of a particular Cambodian province, Grouport pools members with similar concerns into small facilitated video groups led by licensed therapists. The format was designed for exactly this kind of workforce shortage: one trained facilitator working with six to twelve members means capacity expands without waiting for domestic training pipelines to catch up.

80% of Cambodia's mental health workforce falls short of what is needed to fully meet population demand for specialist care.

Grouport's model sidesteps the geographic and workforce bottlenecks that shape care in Cambodia. Matching happens right away through an intake questionnaire, sessions run over HIPAA-compliant video from a laptop or phone with a stable connection, and delivery is in English, which aligns with the working language of many Cambodian professionals, NGO staff, expatriates, and international-school students. Members in Sihanoukville join the same group as members in Phnom Penh or Kampot without any of them commuting.

Access and Availability Across Cambodia.

Mental health infrastructure in Cambodia is anchored by a small number of specialist facilities in Phnom Penh, supplemented by community mental health programs integrated into public health centers in most provincial capitals. Between formal specialist care and informal support, there is a wide middle band of unmet need that online group therapy is well-suited to address.

Geographic Barriers

Cambodia spans about 181,000 square kilometers, with roughly 59% of the population living in rural areas outside the major urban centers. A resident of a rural commune in Kratie or Stung Treng may face a journey of several hours by road to reach the nearest provincial hospital psychiatric unit, and considerably longer to reach the tertiary facilities in Phnom Penh. Rainy season road conditions between May and October further complicate consistent weekly attendance at any in-person program, making video-based group therapy a more practical fit than intermittent travel.

Extended Wait Times

A nine-week wait for a first psychiatric appointment in Cambodia's public system is not the whole picture: follow-up intervals often stretch to two or three months given caseload pressure on the small specialist workforce. For someone dealing with insomnia tied to work stress, or with grief following a family loss, that pace of care means most of the natural window for early support has closed by the time the second session arrives. Grouport members meet weekly with the same therapist and cohort, which restores the rhythm that outpatient care in-country struggles to sustain.

Systemic Challenges

Cambodia does not operate a universal national health insurance program in the way some neighboring economies do. The Health Equity Fund covers formal fees at public facilities for identified poor households, and the National Social Security Fund is being expanded, but psychotherapy is generally not a reimbursed service. Most Cambodians pay out of pocket for any form of counseling, and private clinics in Phnom Penh typically price individual sessions well above what monthly household budgets can sustain over a full treatment course. Grouport's flat $140-per-month rate covers four weekly group sessions, which stays predictable regardless of coverage status.

Urban-Rural Divide

With 40.9% of Cambodians living in urban areas, the majority of the country, about 10.4 million people, resides outside the cities where psychiatrists and clinical psychologists actually practice. Phnom Penh accounts for the lion's share of the country's licensed mental health specialists, followed at a distance by Siem Reap and Battambang. For everyone else, in-person specialist care requires travel that most working adults and students cannot repeat weekly. Online delivery removes the province a member lives in from the equation.

For Cambodian residents comfortable working in English, Grouport turns a mental-health-workforce constraint into a scheduling question rather than a geographic one. A stable internet connection and a weekly hour is the entire access requirement.

Affordable Group Therapy Costs for Cambodia Residents.

Affordability and Income

Against Cambodia's 2024 GNI per capita PPP of $5,600 reported by the World Bank, a $140 monthly Grouport membership works out to approximately 1.8% of average annual income per capita on a purchasing-power basis. That share sits well below what an equivalent course of weekly private counseling in Phnom Penh would consume from a similar household budget, and it stays flat rather than climbing session by session as many hourly-billed private clinics do.

Hidden Cost and Barriers

The sticker price of in-country care omits the surrounding costs that make it hard to sustain. A member commuting from Takeo province to a private counselor in Phnom Penh loses a full working day per session between travel, waiting, and the appointment itself. Fuel, tuk-tuk fares, or bus tickets add up over a course of care, and lost wages weigh heavily for workers paid by shift or piece rate. A video group joined from home or a quiet room at work reduces the real cost of therapy to the session fee itself.

Immediate Availability

Because Grouport matches members to a group right after intake, the practical difference for someone in Cambodia is starting care in the same week rather than the same fiscal quarter. That timing matters most for the concerns, grief, work stress, relationship strain, sleep disruption, where early support shapes how the next few months unfold.

Private individual counseling in Phnom Penh typically ranges from roughly $40 to well over $100 per session at expatriate-oriented clinics, and specialist psychiatric consultations sit at similar or higher levels. For most Cambodian households, sustained weekly therapy at those rates is not a realistic budget item. Grouport prices group therapy at $32 per session, billed as $140 monthly, with unlimited attendance across the four weekly sessions.

Mental Health Conditions We Treat in Cambodia.

Grouport groups in Cambodia focus on the concerns most commonly raised at intake by members across the WPR region: generalized anxiety, depression, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, workplace burnout, social anxiety, panic, trauma recovery, and adjustment following major life transitions such as migration, career change, or the end of a relationship. Groups are organized by shared concern, so a member joins a cohort working on the same theme rather than a general mixed group.

Common Questions About Group Therapy in Cambodia.

How does Grouport's price compare to private therapy in Phnom Penh or Siem Reap?

Private English-language counseling in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap typically runs $60 to $120 per session (roughly 240,000 to 490,000 ៛), and expatriate psychiatrist visits often exceed $100, with almost nothing available outside those two cities. Grouport is $32 per weekly session with a licensed therapist, saving Cambodian professionals, NGO staff, and expatriates roughly half to two-thirds versus local private rates. You join right away on the HIPAA-secure platform in a group of 6 to 12, meeting from home instead of traveling to the capital.

How does Grouport compare to the EAP benefits offered by NGOs and international employers in Phnom Penh?

EAPs from NGOs, embassies, and international schools in Cambodia typically cap counseling at three to six sessions per year, routed through offshore hotlines with rotating clinicians. Grouport gives you a consistent weekly video group of 6 to 12 members led by the same licensed therapist, for $32 per session on a month-to-month basis with no session cap. You can join right away on the HIPAA-secure platform, meeting from home or office in Phnom Penh on Indochina Time (UTC+7), so continuity actually builds week over week.

What's included in the therapy cost—is medication included?
Therapy sessions are just therapy which includes talking with a therapist. Medication is entirely separate. If you need medication, you'd see a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner. That's a different provider with a separate cost, plus prescription costs. At Grouport, we only do therapy, like group therapy, individual therapy, couples therapy, family therapy, combination of group and individual therapy, IOP, and a DBT self guided program. If you need medication management that would be done elsewhere and we can provide referrals for that.
What if I'm struggling with my identity across cultures?
If you grew up between cultures, moved countries, or feel caught between cultural identities, therapy helps. You might not fully belong to any one culture. Questions like "where are you from?" feel complicated. Therapy helps you integrate multiple cultural influences into your sense of self rather than feeling torn between them.
Can therapy help if I'm far from my family?
Living far from family creates loneliness and grief. You miss important events. You can't be there when family needs you. You worry about aging parents. The distance is painful even when you chose to live where you are. Therapy validates this grief and helps you navigate relationships across distance.
What if I feel worse after group sessions?
Temporary discomfort after group can happen, especially initially or after intense sessions. Sometimes processing difficult stuff is uncomfortable initially. Emotions can get elevated. If you consistently feel worse, discuss with the group therapist, perhaps they can adjust the approach, or you may need additional individual support which we can help you with, or assess whether this group is the right fit. Most people find initial discomfort decreases as groups become familiar. The goal is growth through challenge and the therapist monitors carefully to ensure group is therapeutic and not harmful. Therapy shouldn't leave you consistently feeling worse, but sometimes hard work is in fact a sign of healing and it can come before you feel better.
Can group therapy address trauma?
Absolutely, we have specific groups geared to Trauma & PTSD. So for trauma we would recommend a trauma group. We also find that Dialectical Behavior Therapy “DBT” groups are often also helpful for trauma & PTSD. The shared experience among trauma survivors is healing and realizing you're not alone in what happened or how it affected you is essential for progress. Trauma groups are usually structured carefully so that you can process trauma effectively, and they can include specific trauma techniques like EMDR or rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
What if my schedule changes and I can't attend anymore?
If your schedule changes temporarily, that’s totally normal and missing a couple of sessions here and there like 2-3 sessions is acceptable as long as there's commitment to return. If missing session is happening a lot due to your scheduling changes, talk to a care coordinator about switching to a different group time that works better for your schedule and they’ll be sure to assist. This is precisely why we allow to switch groups at any time as we know scheduling changes do happen. Or pause and return later when it's convenient for you. Life changes and schedules shift, so it's important that you find a group that works for you and your schedule.
Can I do online group therapy if I'm very introverted?
Yes, introverts often do really well in group therapy once they get past initial discomfort. You don't have to be the loudest person to benefit and what often happens is that introverts open up overtime. Quiet observation is totally valid and a skilled group therapist makes space for different communication styles. The therapist works with your natural communication style while encouraging growth promoting challenges. Groups benefit from diverse personalities such as introverts who provide balance and thoughtfulness to session.
What information do you share with insurance companies?
When you submit for insurance reimbursement, we provide a superbill that includes: your name, therapist's name and credentials, dates of services rendered, cost paid per session, and any other relevant information needed for reimbursement.
Can my employer see that I'm using therapy services?
No, your employer cannot see that you're using Grouport unless you tell them. Even if you're using employer-provided insurance for reimbursement, HIPAA laws prevent insurers from sharing details about your mental health care with your employer. Your employer might see that you filed an insurance claim for "mental health services," but they won't see provider details, session notes, or any information about your care. If you're paying out-of-pocket or using an HSA/FSA, there's no connection to your employer at all beyond the general use of benefits.
Is my payment information secure?
Yes, all payment information is processed through secure payment systems that meet banking industry security standards. Your credit card information is encrypted and stored by our payment processor. Grouport staff never see or have access to your full card details, we only see the last 4 digits for billing purposes. The same security protocols used by major retailers and banks protect your payment data. You can safely update your payment method on file at any time.
