Get Better, Together

Group Therapy for Haiti, Delivered Online.

Haiti counts just 7.32 mental health workers for every 100,000 residents, and the average wait for a first appointment stretches to roughly 52 weeks. Grouport places you in a licensed group right away for $32 a session, streamed over HIPAA-grade video wherever you have a stable connection in the Americas region.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Haiti mental health access, by the numbers.

Understanding the landscape of mental health care access and the challenges
residents face across the state.

Mental Illness Prevalence

16.5% of Haitian adults live with a mental health condition each year, reflecting the ongoing need for accessible therapy options.

Wait Time

52 weeks the average wait to secure a first mental health appointment in Haiti's public system, an interval during which symptoms often deepen.

Median Household Income

$1,752 median household income in Haiti, shaping what households can allocate to private mental health care.

Percentage Who Need Therapy

94.0% of Haitian adults with a mental health condition do not receive formal specialist treatment.

Provider Shortage

85% of Haiti's mental health workforce falls short of what is needed to fully meet population demand for specialist care.

Mental Health Providers per 100k Residents

7.32 per 100,000 mental health workers in Haiti, a density that shapes availability, wait times, and access across the country.

The figures above pull from the WHO Global Health Observatory and World Bank country profiles for Haiti. Together they describe a system where demand vastly outpaces the roughly 800 mental health professionals serving a population of over 11 million.

UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE

Why the AMR region makes online groups a practical fit.

The Problem

Haiti's mental health infrastructure has been strained by successive shocks, and the 7.32 workers per 100,000 figure. Even when a clinician is available, most private consultations happen in Port-au-Prince, forcing residents of the Nord, Artibonite, or Sud departments to arrange multi-hour road travel through terrain and security conditions that are often unpredictable. For working adults and caregivers, that logistical cost is frequently the reason a first appointment never gets booked at all.

The Impact

The downstream effect is a quiet backlog of untreated anxiety, grief, and burnout. With roughly 55% of Haitians living in urban centers and the remainder spread across rural communes, the 52-week wait we cite is really an average that hides much longer delays outside the capital. World Bank income data classifies Haiti as lower-middle, so out-of-pocket private fees, which are the norm for psychotherapy, compete directly with school fees, transport, and household staples in most family budgets.

The Solution

Grouport's model was built for exactly this shape of gap. A single flat rate of $32 per session, billed as $140 monthly, replaces the variable per-visit pricing that makes in-country care hard to budget. You can join a group right away compresses the 52-week wait into a weekend. And because groups run over HIPAA video with licensed clinicians, the geography of Haiti's provider concentration in Port-au-Prince stops being the limiting factor.

85% of Haiti's mental health workforce falls short of what is needed to fully meet population demand for specialist care.

Practically, a Haitian participant needs only a phone or laptop and a workable internet connection during the AMR-friendly evening slots we hold. The group of six to twelve peers meets weekly, the therapist is the same licensed clinician each week, and the video room is encrypted end to end. Nothing about the format requires travel to a clinic, a car, a private office, or navigation of the domestic referral system, all of which are the usual friction points when Haitians try to start therapy locally.

Access and availability for Haitians.

Access, more than clinical philosophy, is what determines whether therapy actually happens in Haiti. The WHO figure of 7.32 mental health workers per 100,000 residents is the single most important number on this page: it explains why appointments are rationed, why waits run into months, and why online options have become a serious complement to the in-country system rather than a novelty.

Geographic Barriers

Geography compounds the workforce shortage. With about 55% of the population classified as urban by the World Bank, the roughly 45% living in Grand'Anse, Nippes, Nord-Est, Sud-Est, and other predominantly rural departments face the longest routes to a psychiatrist or psychologist. Road conditions between Les Cayes, Jeremie, Fort-Liberte, and the capital are variable, and inter-departmental travel for a recurring weekly appointment is rarely realistic. Grouport removes that variable entirely by meeting people on whatever device is already in their home.

Extended Wait Times

The 52-week average wait we cite for a first in-country consultation is a national estimate; in practice, delays cluster around the small number of specialists in Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien and stretch further in the departments. A Grouport intake, by contrast, is scheduled inside immediate of enrollment, and the first group session typically follows within the same week. That compression matters most for people in acute distress, for whom a three-month wait is functionally a denial of care.

Systemic Challenges

Systemically, Haiti's mental health budget has historically represented a small fraction of overall health spending, and NGO-run programs fill many of the gaps that the public sector cannot. This is not a failing of local clinicians, who are stretched extraordinarily thin, but a structural reality reflected in every WHO Mental Health Atlas cycle. Adding an English-language, licensed video option through Grouport does not fix the domestic system, but it does give the diaspora and English-comfortable Haitians one more viable door.

Urban-Rural Divide

The urban-rural split matters clinically. A resident of Petionville may be a 20-minute drive from a private psychologist; a resident of Miragoane or Hinche may be four hours from one. The 55% urban figure understates that gap because it treats mid-size coastal towns and the capital as one category. Grouport's video-only model flattens the difference: your session runs on the same schedule whether you log in from the metropolitan area or from a rural commune with a working mobile hotspot.

Access is the reason Grouport exists in this market. What it does provide is a same-week, predictably priced, English-language group therapy option delivered by licensed clinicians to Haitians who would otherwise be looking at a 52-week wait for a first appointment.

Cost and value in Haitian household terms.

Affordability and Income

Affordability, in the Haitian context, is really about predictability. A local private-practice consultation can range widely depending on the clinician's training and location, and repeat weekly attendance quickly becomes untenable for lower-middle-income households. At $140 per month for four weekly groups, Grouport lands close to the price of a single specialist appointment in some urban private practices, and the cost does not change if you attend three weeks or five in a given month. That predictability makes ongoing therapy a line item a family can actually keep in a budget.

Hidden Cost and Barriers

The hidden costs of in-country care are real: transport to Port-au-Prince or Cap-Haitien, time off work, childcare arrangements, and, for rural residents, sometimes an overnight stay. None of those apply to a video group you join from your kitchen. For Haitians whose nearest specialist is a multi-hour drive away, those avoided costs frequently exceed the session fee itself, which is one reason we hear from participants in Nord and Sud departments that online groups became sustainable where clinic visits never were.

Immediate Availability

Immediate availability is itself a form of value. When the alternative is a 52-week wait, the option to begin right away turns a decision to seek help into an action taken the same week. Grouport participants in Haiti typically complete a short intake, receive a group match within one to two business days, and attend their first weekly session before the week is out.

Haiti sits in the World Bank's lower-middle-income group, and private psychotherapy is almost always paid out of pocket. Grouport's flat $32 per session, billed as $140 monthly for weekly attendance, gives Haitian households a fixed number to plan around rather than the variable per-visit pricing that dominates the local private market.

Common questions from Haitian participants.

What does the first Grouport session look like from Cap-Haitien or Port-au-Prince, and what do I need to join?

Your first session is a 60-minute video meeting on Eastern Time, which matches Haiti year-round, so a 7pm ET group starts at 7pm locally with no time-zone math. You need a smartphone or laptop with a stable Digicel, Natcom, or home Wi-Fi connection. A licensed therapist opens the group of 6 to 12 members, invites brief introductions in English, and guides a structured topic. After booking you join right away, with no 12-week wait or clinic travel through Port-au-Prince.

Can I pay for Grouport from Haiti if I only have a local HTG debit card or need to use a diaspora card?

Grouport is $32 per session in USD and accepts Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, which covers most Sogebank, Unibank, and BNC dollar-denominated cards issued in Port-au-Prince and Petion-Ville. Clients paying with an HTG-only card can settle through a USD prepaid card, a MonCash-linked international card, or a diaspora relative's card, since Grouport does not require the cardholder to attend. Payment is processed once on a HIPAA-secure gateway, and you join a weekly video group of 6 to 12 members right away.

What if I miss a session—do I still pay?
For private sessions, we require 48-72 hours notice to cancel/reschedule without charge. If you no-show or cancel last-minute, you would be charged. For groups we can add in session credits within reason if you miss a session here and there, but the premise is that you're paying monthly regardless of whether you use all your sessions. If you miss group sessions on occasion, we understand and that’s normal, so we can provide session credits as long as it's within reason.
What if I'm struggling with loneliness where I live?
Loneliness happens anywhere. Maybe you're new somewhere and don't have community yet. Maybe cultural differences make friendships hard. Maybe you're isolated for other reasons. Online therapy provides consistent human connection and helps you work on building community where you are.
Can therapy help if I'm experiencing political instability or conflict?
Living through political instability, protests, violence, or conflict is traumatic. Therapy provides support during crises, helps you process ongoing stress and fear, and addresses trauma. If you're in danger, therapy also helps with safety planning and deciding whether to leave.
Will I have to share my story in front of strangers?
You're never forced to share anything in online group therapy. Groups work at your own pace, and many people observe for several sessions before actively participating, and that's completely acceptable. Good group therapists create safety where participation feels natural overtime. You might start by simply introducing yourself, then gradually share more as comfort builds. Many people worry about this initially but find that sharing with others who genuinely understand because they struggle in a similar way is less scary and more relieving than expected and it's precisely this vulnerability that leads to tremendous progress. Group members typically respond with empathy and support and not judgment. The therapeutic power comes partly from being witnessed and accepted by others. Most people find that they are naturally willing to open up over time and share more, as it's precisely this vulnerability and being open with others that leads to the bulk of therapeutic progress.
How long do I need to attend online group therapy?
Online group therapy duration varies by person. Some people attend for months and others attend for years. It’s totally based on what’s helpful for you and there’s no standard timeline. Minimum commitment to see clinically significant results is typically 8-12 sessions since groups need time to build cohesion and trust. So you can go for as long as it’s helpful for you and there’s no set duration. You can leave when your goals are met or continue ongoing support for maintenance, whichever works best for you. This is why we also provide the flexibility to cancel at any time.
What issues does online group therapy help with?
Online group therapy addresses anxiety, depression, social anxiety, grief, trauma & PTSD, relationship issues, life transitions, anger management, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), Bipolar, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), self-esteem, stress management, emotion regulation skills (DBT groups), chronic illness, parenting challenges, substance use recovery, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and much more. So, we offer pretty much any kind of group where shared experience and peer feedback add value. Groups are often organized around specific themes so you're with people dealing with similar situations.
What if I don't want to hear about other people's problems?
This concern is understandable as when you're struggling, it seems counterintuitive that listening to others' problems can help you. However, online group therapy works differently than expected as hearing others describe similar struggles reduces isolation and shame, observing others' progress provides hope and practical strategies that you can implement, giving support to others builds confidence and purpose, and different perspectives help you see your situation more clearly, and witnessing others' challenges often provides needed perspective on your own. Online Group Therapy isn't just venting about problems, but rather it's active problem-solving and skill-building together. If group feels like it's dragging you down rather than helping, perhaps it’s a matter of the group fit and it's worth exploring a different group fit, or individual therapy might be a better fit. But most people find that supporting and learning from others is surprisingly beneficial, and that is why the majority of our members do online group therapy as a primary part of their treatment plan.
How does online therapy work?
Online therapy with Grouport works through video sessions where you meet with a licensed therapist from the comfort of your home. After you sign up, we match you with a therapist within 24-48 hours based on your needs, schedule, and preferences. Sessions are conducted via our HIPAA-compliant video platform - you simply log in at your scheduled time and connect with your therapist. You'll receive the same evidence-based treatment and professional care as in-person therapy, with the added convenience of attending from anywhere.
What happens if my internet cuts out mid-session?
If your internet disconnects during a group session, rest assured your therapist will still be there as it's a group session with other group members, so they will be there when you rejoin. For private sessions, like individual therapy, your therapist will wait 20 minutes for you to reconnect. Try refreshing your browser, using a private or different web browser, restarting your device, switching to a different device, or switching to mobile data if wifi isn’t working. If you can’t resolve the issue contact our technical support team at and they will work with you on resolving.
Can I change my session times?
Yes, if you need to change your recurring group therapy session time you can absolutely switch groups to one that works better for your schedule. Groups work on a set schedule so we don’t reschedule group sessions but if you can’t make a particular group session we can always add in a credit as long as it's within reason. If you need to reschedule an individual, couples, or a family therapy session, you can coordinate with your therapist and our care team to find a new time for that week - just provide advance notice. ✅ Occasional reschedules are fine, but we recommend keeping changes to a minimum for consistency. ✅ Need to change your recurring weekly time? Our team will help you adjust to a new time that fits your schedule.
