Get Better, Together
Grouport delivers licensed online group therapy across St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John for $32 per session. With only 35.2 mental health workers per 100,000 residents and a 7-week average wait for local in-person appointments, the territory's outpatient system leaves many Virgin Islanders searching for consistent, affordable care. Our English-language cohorts of 6 to 12 peers meet over HIPAA-compliant video on set weekly schedules, and members join right away after a brief intake. Because Atlantic Standard Time overlaps closely with U.S. Eastern evening slots, residents in Charlotte Amalie, Christiansted, Frederiksted, and Cruz Bay can attend after-work sessions without rearranging their day or booking inter-island travel.

Understanding the landscape of mental health care access and the challenges
residents face across the state.
These figures reflect a small territorial system stretched thin by geography and post-hurricane recovery. When Hurricanes Irma and Maria damaged Roy Lester Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas and Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix in 2017, behavioral health services were displaced for months, and FEMA-funded rebuilds are still closing capacity gaps nearly a decade later. Roughly three-quarters of Virgin Islanders identify as Black or Afro-Caribbean, and care-seeking patterns are shaped by strong Puerto Rican, Dominican, and continental U.S. diaspora ties. Grouport's evening cohorts give residents an entry point that does not depend on the availability of the three outpatient clinics or the two territorial hospitals.
UNDERSTANDING THE CHALLENGE
Across the AMR region, small island systems like the U.S. Virgin Islands face acute workforce shortages, and the territory's 35.2 mental health workers per 100,000 residents fall far below the national U.S. figure. The Division of Mental Health, Alcoholism and Drug Dependency Services operates outpatient clinics on all three main islands, but inpatient beds are concentrated at Roy Lester Schneider Hospital on St. Thomas and Juan F. Luis Hospital on St. Croix, and specialty care often requires off-island referral to Puerto Rico or the mainland.
The 7-week wait for a local appointment leaves Virgin Islanders managing anxiety, depression, grief, and post-hurricane stress without professional support during the most acute phase. Residents on St. John, where no hospital exists, face additional inter-island travel by ferry to reach in-person providers, and the cost and time of that trip can turn a scheduled session into a full-day commitment.
Grouport addresses these constraints with licensed clinicians holding LCSW, LMFT, LPC, PsyD, or PhD credentials leading cohorts of 6 to 12 members. Groups meet weekly over HIPAA-compliant video, and because English is the sole official language of the territory, Virgin Islanders slot into existing cohorts without any language or content adaptation.
Reliable telehealth eliminates the ferry commute between St. Thomas, St. Croix, and St. John and removes the 7-week queue that gates local in-person appointments. Atlantic Standard Time runs one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern year-round, so a 7:00 PM AST group aligns with 6:00 PM ET, giving after-work access to residents in Charlotte Amalie, Christiansted, and Cruz Bay alike.
Access to mental health care in the U.S. Virgin Islands is shaped by the territory's small population of roughly 87,000 residents, the three-island geography, and a workforce density of 35.2 clinicians per 100,000 people. The Department of Health's Division of Mental Health, Alcoholism and Drug Dependency Services runs the public outpatient network, and Medicare, Medicaid, and private carriers such as United Healthcare and Cigna operate in the territory. Still, the practical experience of finding, scheduling, and reaching a provider often reveals gaps that population and coverage figures alone do not capture.
At $32 per session or $140 per month, Grouport costs less than a single tank of gas at St. Thomas or St. Croix pump prices and less than a round-trip ferry ticket to St. John. For a member attending four sessions a month, the total sits well under one hour of typical private-pay mainland telehealth billing. Sessions are led by licensed clinicians holding LCSW, LMFT, LPC, PsyD, or PhD credentials, so the low price does not come from clinical corner-cutting.
The visible session fee is only part of what in-person care costs a Virgin Islander. Missed work time for a ferry to St. Thomas from St. John, fuel between Frederiksted and Christiansted, childcare during a clinic visit, and airfare to San Juan for specialty referral all compound the sticker price. Grouport removes every one of these line items: sessions run over video from wherever the member has a screen and headphones.
Local outpatient clinics carry the 7-week average wait, and off-island referrals can extend that further once travel is arranged. Grouport groups run on a fixed weekly cadence, so a Virgin Islander who completes intake on Monday can join a group meeting on Wednesday. That immediacy matters when the reason for seeking help, hurricane anniversary distress, grief, workplace anxiety, or a relationship strain, is happening now, not seven weeks from now.
Household income in the U.S. Virgin Islands is high relative to many Caribbean neighbors, but the cost of living, particularly for imported goods, medical services, and off-island specialty care, is also elevated. Private-pay therapy in the territory or through mainland telehealth platforms typically runs $100 to $200 per session, and residents referred off-island for specialty care shoulder airfare and lodging on top of the clinical fee. Grouport's $32-per-session rate reframes what consistent weekly care can cost.

Grouport's cohorts cover the concerns Virgin Islanders most often raise: generalized and social anxiety, depression, grief and bereavement, trauma including post-hurricane stress from Irma and Maria, relationship and family conflict, and the stress-management concerns that come with island living, tourism-economy workloads, and shift-based hospitality or health-care jobs common across St. Thomas and St. Croix. Groups follow evidence-based frameworks including cognitive behavioral therapy and dialectical behavior therapy skills, adapted for the peer-cohort format.

Our therapists represent a wide range of clinical specialties & diverse backgrounds. They all undergo the most stringent credentialing process. Grouport therapists are caring, expert mental health professionals with years of experience helping people get the tools they need to see long-lasting change.
Every Grouport group is led by a licensed clinician credentialed as an LCSW, LMFT, LPC, PsyD, or PhD, with experience facilitating small-group work over secure video. Because English is the sole official language of the U.S. Virgin Islands and the primary language of government, education, and health care, therapists lead sessions in English and Virgin Islanders slot into existing cohorts alongside members from across the United States without any adaptation. Facilitators keep group size at 6 to 12 members so every participant has room to speak each week.

Our therapists are licensed clinicians who facilitate groups for members across the territory. Because Grouport is a peer-support group format rather than individual therapy or psychiatric care, the licensing rules that govern one-on-one treatment in the USVI do not apply the same way. If you need medication management, court-ordered evaluation, or crisis care, contact the Division of Mental Health, Alcoholism and Drug Dependency Services or Roy Lester Schneider Hospital directly. Grouport works alongside, not in place of, those services.
Yes. Grouport runs entirely over secure video, so your location within the territory does not affect access. St. John residents who would otherwise need to ferry to St. Thomas for the Division of Mental Health outpatient clinic can join a group from home. You need a private space and a stable internet connection. Sessions are billed in USD, so there is no currency conversion, and Atlantic Standard Time keeps most U.S. Eastern group schedules workable year-round.
Grouport serves every district of the U.S. Virgin Islands: St. Thomas including Charlotte Amalie, Red Hook, and Estate Thomas; St. Croix including Christiansted, Frederiksted, Sunny Isle, and Kingshill; St. John including Cruz Bay and Coral Bay; and the surrounding cays. Because sessions run over HIPAA-compliant video, a member's district determines nothing about their access to a group, only their local time zone, which is Atlantic Standard Time across the entire territory.
Members join from Charlotte Amalie, Christiansted, Frederiksted, Cruz Bay, Coral Bay, Red Hook, Kingshill, Sunny Isle, Estate Tutu, and every settlement in between. The 96-percent urban footprint of the territory means most Virgin Islanders live within a few miles of a town center with reliable internet, and group members from smaller settlements like East End on St. Thomas or the interior of St. Croix connect on the same schedule and terms as those in the largest population centers.
Grouport serves all zip codes across U.S. Virgin Islands. If you have an address in U.S. Virgin Islands, Grouport can serve you regardless of your zip code.
